Webmaster

Tricks and Tips by Orb

Webmaster is not a straight adventure game, so it does not lend itself to a walkthrough. Rather, the player discovers areas in varying orders according to gameplay, so we're going to cover which areas are important and what gets done in them, as well as what cards are needed to complete the four levels of gameplay.

Cards

The main item collected throughout the game is cards. There are a number of ways to collect cards. The easiest way is to pick them up on the ground at various locations throughout the game. The second easiest way is by traveling from one location to another, and while en route, playing a simple arcade game to hit a number of passing targets with the cursor. In this game, the card you will receive at the end is identified by the object laying at the entrance before the player passes through the doorway and also by a picture of the item on a card in the upper left corner while the game is going on.

Hints

If you shake the mouse back and forth in the middle of any screen, your helper Gettie, Enzo, will come along and provide you with information about the area you are in and what to do. It's kind of a hint system, in a very broad manner of speaking.

Can Game

This is a game where you can pick up cans from either side of the screen and throw them at the Getties, which makes them drop cards. You can usually get only one kind of card from each of these (there are two of them), so once you collect one, don't bother trying to get more. The best strategy to do this (it looks impossible at first) is to practice over and over hitting the can exactly on the giant chocolate bar on the fence for the earliest can game, and for the later one, the red-and-white striped banner across the back fence. Since these are what they're heading toward, if you get this down, you can always hit one, as long as you are patient.

Shuffle Puck

This is a shuffleboard game that you play with a Gettie to win a card you need. Use a chocolate bar card to bet with the Getties, and they will always take the bet. Wait until they show you a card that you need/don't have, and click and hold on the chocolate bard card over the slot across from it, and you will be taken to the game. You must click and hold the mouse to move your game piece. If you keep your game piece within the purple circle, the Gettie will never be able to get the puck past it to beat you. If you hold it still straight in the center, the Gettie will just keep playing until it loses. Do this three times to get your card.

21 Dice Game

This one is very straightforward, and you must play to get the highest score up to 21, without going over, against a Gettie betting cards. You can sometimes get a similar number to one the Gettie has just gotten if you do not throw the die very high. Again, with this game you have to bet a card to play, and betting a candy bar card will get you in.

Arcade Game

In three different areas of the game, there are rooms where you can force the Getties back until they hit the back wall and drop their cards. These are the most difficult sequences in the game (and don't even talk to me about what they were like using a laptop's trackpad). The idea is to bat a Gettie back in the screen you are in, and when you have batted him so that he has gone waaay back and you can barely see him, quickly move forward to the next screen to catch him and bat him back again. Do this to the end screen, and he will drop a card for you.

Card Combinations

There are four levels of gameplay, and to pass through to the next the player goes through a room called a firewall and lays down a set of three cards found. Here are the possible combinations for each firewall:

Level 1

  • Cheese, tomato, pizza dough
  • Chicken leg, charcoal, grill
  • Marshmallow, skewer, bonfire
  • Ice cream, pineapple, parasol

Level 2

  • Hollow tube, telescope, paper arrow
  • String, dart, target
  • Pellet, catapult, spider
  • Nail file, picture frame, little ball

Level 3

  • Rattle, flashlight, divining rod
  • Garlic, cross, wooden stake
  • Doll, silver bullet, matches
  • Scale, broom, wild berries

Level 4

  • Rotten fish, cat paw, motor oil
  • Quicklime, Stinkhorn fungus, olive oil
  • Coconut, bull's-eye, chili pepper
  • Snail shell, tear gas, leaky battery

To determine which item is which, there are two screens in the game that say "Hacker" as a newspaper headline. If you go forward to the board (called a "Discussion Forum"), you can place three cards at a time on the board, zoom out, then zoom in, and there will be a message telling you what the item on the card is.

Virus Cures

There are also two "Forums" that are virus forums, and these tell you what cards go together to cure the three viruses that you will find. The possible combinations of cards for the three viruses are:

  • The Vanishing Virus: Eagle feather, snow cloud, magnifying glass
  • The Grey World Virus: Rainbow, artist's palette, paintbrush
  • The Reverser Virus: Tomato, mirror, negative

Saves

When saving locations, the most important ones to save are the Forums, Firewalls, the two can games, the dice game, the table hockey game, and the three arcade games. If you have these, you can go back and forth to get more cards if you are missing any you need to complete a set.

Online Code

Once you reach the end of the game, you are given a code word to use to continue playing the game online. The code is EBHKO.
